Why We Make Laws

Using the five reasons we make laws, give an example from each reason from different areas of your life (examples: in school, at home, at work, in society). I have given you an example in the comments area.

The five reasons:
Keep Order
Ensure Safety
Protect Property
Protect Your Constitutional Rights
Promote the Common Good

  1. Keep Order: Keep students in classroom until time to go to next class.

    Ensure Safety: Practice fire drills.

    Protect Property: Keep records regarding book inventories and student sign outs.

    Protect Constitutional Rights: Refrain from drug testing in classroom.

    Promote Common Good: Provide use of textbooks for free to all students.

  4. Keep Order: Students raising their hands in the classroom.
    Ensure Safety: Set evacuation plans in case of a fire drill or secure classroom drill.
    Protect Property: Students are given lockers that lock to keep their things in.
    Protect Constitutional Rights: Teachers or administrators are not allowed to search students lockers or bags without having a reasonable reason to do so.
    Promote Common Good: The school provides water fountains to keep the students hydrated during the day.

  5. Keep order-at school you are not allowed to have your cell phone.
    Ensure safety- you are not allowed to hit people at school.
    Protecting property-you are not allowed to take someone else's information on a report without citing it, and giving that person credit.
    Protecting Freedom- you have the freedom of speech, but be careful what you say bacause you still can get in trouble.
    Promoting the Common Good- Free computers that students are allowed to use.

  9. An example of keeping order is having traffic lights to make it so one lane goes at time.
    An example of ensuring safety is having seatbelt laws to protect you from crashes.
    An example of protecting property is people not being able to steal ur money from your backpack while you are at lunch.
    An example of Constitutional Rights is pledgerism.
    An example of Commone Good is doing something good for the people.

    Protect Property: Do not give out passwords or locker combinations
    Protect Constitutional Rights: Refrain from using hate speech anywhere
    Promote Common Good: Do not sell anything that someone else may need if they do not have the money to pay for it.

  13. Keep order- people drive on the correct side of the road

    Ensure saftey- all airplanes have emergency evacuation plans

    Protecting property- you're not allowed to pirate music, or movies

    Protecting freedom- teachers aren't allowed to take your bag and search it for no reason

    Promoting the common good- students have to attend school untill they're 18

  14. Keep Order: Disturbing the peace, loud parties and most states have limits on how loud motorcycles can be.
    Ensure Safety: All public buildings have to be inspected so they're safe.
    Protect Property: just try to walk into someone's house and nonchalantly walk to your car with their TV in hand.
    Protect Your Constitutional Rights: Separation of church and state keeps religion out of school.
    Promote the Common Good: New environmental laws.

  15. Keep Order- Specific functions of kitchen work for chefs

    Ensure Safety- Safety regulation laws/Food prep, etc.

    Protect Property- recipes are the property of the recipe's author.

    Protect Your Constitutional Rights- The right to speak my mind, "I hate Ashley Reed". I'm able to say that without getting in trouble :)

    Promote the Common Good- Going to highschool for free

  17. At work: Dunkin Donuts :P
    Keep Order: Make sure everyone is at their station and not just standing out back talking while customers wait.
    Ensure Safety: Make sure no knives are exposed and employees have slip free shoes in case of spills.
    Protect Property: Customers cannot go behind the counter or near the dumpster area.
    Protect Your Constitutional Rights: If an employee has a problem with serving a certain customer for any reason, they have the right not to serve them. (of course someone else will)
    Promote The Common Good: Provide customers with what they want in a decent amount of time.

    Ensure Safety- Food laws so I don't get poisined

    Protect Property- provide art supplies for students with our tax payers money

    Protect Your Constitutional Rights- freedom of speach

    Promote the Common Good - Right of way to the beach.

    Ensure safety: keep students safe from fires and intruders in the school.
    Protecting Property: keep people from stealing stuff.
    Protecting Freedom: People are allowed to say how they feel on subjects.
    Promoting the common good: Giving student information to help them in the world.

    Protect Property: Students are not allowed to steal from other students lockers or bags.

    Protect Your Constitutional Rights: Students have the right to practice/believe religion of choice as long as they do not push it on others.

    Promote the Common Good: Students with special needs are provided with teachers to help address those needs.

    Ensure Safety: the FDA makes foods meet high standards that guarantee they are safe for the public to eat.

    Protect Property: students have locks on their lockers, and their codes are confidential.

    Protect Your Constitutional Rights: households/individuals have the right to posess guns.

    Promote the Common Good: Everyone has the right to attend free public schools.
